The risk of injury is as low as when windsurfing. No dragging kites, no lines to get caught up, you don't need much space or the help of others to launch. For support and safety at all times, we are using helmets, protections vests, power boats & jetskis during most lessons.

Everything You Need To Know To Learn Wing Foiling

What is Wing Foiling and Surf Foiling

Wing Foiling is the combination of a wing, hold by the surfer/sailor and a hydrofoil mounted with a mast onto a surfboard. The wing which resembles a kitesurf kite or windsurf sail is handheld (no lines) and used to generate power to propel a surfer/sailor standing on a board with a hydrofoil underneath. When the wing is positioned to generate power the hydrofoil “lifts” the sailor and board above the water, giving the effect of floating or flying with ‘wings’ across the water.
Surf Foiling or Surf Prone is using a foil board or hydrofoil to surf.  These boards are essentially a surfboard with a hydrofoil that extends below the board into the water. In Surf Foiling the surfer paddles into a wave and once picking up some speed the hydrofoil develops lift and hovers the board above the surface of the water with the foil working in the water.  The Surf Foiling or Surf Prone discipline does not require anything else just the board.  The surfing/riding experience has limited friction resulting in higher speeds than a surfboard.

FAQ

HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WING FOILING OR SURF PRONE FOILING?

Below we give answers to the most frequently asked questions. Please feel free to get in touch at any time.

  • WHO CAN LEARN WING FOILING AND HYDRO FOILING?

If you can swim we can teach you how to foil, without exception. Our structured three module approach allows students to build skills and confidence and learn foiling in the most effective way. Recommended minimum age: 9

  • HOW DIFFICULT IS WING FOILING?

Wing foiling is much easier to learn than windsurfing or kitesurfing, especially for people under 99. It may take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to learn to wing foil. This will depend on your background experience, the conditions you're learning in, and the equipment you are using.

  • HOW MUCH WIND DO YOU NEED TO WING HYDRO FOIL?

Much less than for kitesurfing. While you do not need much power once on foil, you still need enough power to lift off. Experienced wing foilers with a couple of wings at hand can enjoy anything from 8 to 40 knots!

  • DO YOU HAVE PRIVATE CLASSES?

Yes. Our school is running both group and individual classes.

  • CAN I FOIL UPWIND WITH A HYDRO FOIL WING?

Absolutely! The great thing about wing foiling is that it is such an efficient way to get around.

  • HOW DO I SURF WITH A SURF WING FOIL?

For anyone from a regular or a surf-foiling background the benefits are massive. You can use the wing to power yourself out into the line up and then, when ‘wave power’ takes over, you can just hold the wing behind you and simply focus on the ride.

  • HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT HYDRO FOIL AND WING FOIL BOARD?

As with starting any sport, you want to choose a board, wing and sail that is easy to learn on, but that you will not outgrow too quickly. Talk to us and we are happy to take you through all available options!

  • HOW DOES A HYDRO/ SURF FOIL WORK IN THE WATER?

Foiling is basic physics and is like an airplane. The foil in the water has a similar shape to wings mounted to airplanes; Forward speed is created either by wind applied to a hand held sail (wing) or waves pushing the foil under water. As the surfer leans back on his back foot, the wing tilts more upright and creates more lift. If the surfer applies weight on his front foot, the wing, the lift decreases and the wing lands and board goes back to water surface. Lift can be generated by either waves pushing the foil/wing forward or wind energy in a sail or getting towed behind a boat.
